A WAY OF LIFE

Eighteen years
of music.

Debrissa McKinney is a vocalist and tenor saxophonist whose eighteen-year career has moved through funk, rock, soul, brass, outlaw country, hip-hop, and more.

She performed and recorded with bands and artists whose music could be completely different from one another, moving between lead vocals, backing vocals, horn sections, studio sessions, and the stage.

Those years also took her far from home, with performances across the United States and in Australia, India, Jamaica, Canada, and the Netherlands.

By then, those eighteen years had grown to include more bands, records, stages, and places than she could have imagined at the beginning.

The music kept
opening doors.

A band could lead to a record. A recording could lead to a tour. A tour could open the door to another stage, another collaboration, another part of the world.

Over time, those individual opportunities became something much bigger.

Not one chapter or one defining moment, but a career built piece by piece, each part making room for what came next.

Years on the road

Across the country.
Around the world.

There were years when the next city was always waiting. Load in, soundcheck, play the show, pack it up, and do it again somewhere else.

Some places became familiar. Others were seen once and never again. Somewhere along the way, all that movement stopped feeling like travel and simply became life.

In my own words

Where I am now.

For so long, my life was measured in shows, cities, flights, studios, and stages.

I became a mother, and the center of my world changed.

I still take the occasional show. Every now and then, I step back into a studio. Those moments feel different now because music no longer sets the schedule for my life.

For years, music took me around the world. Now I’m discovering what I can create from right here at home.
